Hypnosis is a tool. Using it, a qualified hypnotist can offer targeted suggestions for addressing a concern. The term hypnotherapy is often encountered when hypnosis is used with other holistic healthcare practices such as psychotherapy, nutritional counseling, and certain medical procedures. However, hypnotherapy is also more generally described as the process of using hypnosis to uncover hidden issues (perhaps events from the past), that may be influencing present attitudes and leading to unhealthy or self-defeating behavior. A certified hypnotherapist is a hypnotherapist who has completed the training qualifications required by a national or international association of hypnotherapists such as the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH). Certification is maintained by adherence to the association's code of standards and by meeting requirements for continuous, on-going education in hypnosis and related fields.
